In words and pictures the book recalls the old Christmas Eve customs
and rites of the Beskidy region. Maria Gatnar-Guzy, a Polish folk
artist known abroad as well, has created wonderful paintings on
glass which place the biblical events in a Beskidy Mountain setting
and recall forgotten folk customs. Hanna Szczudłowska complements
the images with poems. The publication was nominated for the Polish
Association of Book Publishers 42nd Competition for Most Beautiful
Books of the Year.
"If You had been born in the Beskidy Mountains, Jesus, the
bagpipers would have played for you, and you'd have worn a sheepskin
coat,' announces the introduction to the newest book from Buffi
Press in Bielsko-Biała ... An angel wakes village shepherds herding
sheep in a high mountain pasture, for them to go to the manger with
a basketful of homemade ewe-milk cheeses, to bow to Jesus. Over
the newborn bends the Virgin Mary in folk kerchief and moccasins,
and St. Joseph keeps vigil in a Carpathian highlander's cloak."
