Warsaw occupies a special place in the family of European capitals,
because of its history as a heroic, unvanquished city energetically
lifting itself up from repeated destruction. Warsaw's greatest
pride is the Old Town, together with the Cathedral and the Royal
Castle, listed by UNESCO as a monument of the world's cultural
heritage, an extraordinary example of the complete reconstruction
of a historic complex. Old Town Square, with its multicolored
town houses, churches, plazas and lanes, the ring of defensive
walls, its emblem in the figure of the Mermaid, and the King
Sigismund Column, is a mark and symbol of Polish culture and
national identity.
That is the Warsaw shown in this second edition of Wojciech Kryński's
album of photography.
Professor Marek Kwiatkowski's introduction and the interesting
tidbits and historical information given by Jerzy Majewski recall
the atmosphere of bygone days.
